Every year, the Heiva festivities kick off this
week with shows from traditional dance schools and last until the end of July.
Formerly called “Tiurai” – meaning July in Tahitian – this festival period
has seen several cultural events staged to promote traditional sport and dance
over the years: outrigger canoe races, rock lifting, javelin throwing, fruit
carrying races and, of course, the much anticipated Heiva i Tahiti traditional
song and dance contest which starts at the beginning of July.
The 130th contest is sure to be another incredible and colourful
event. No less than 16 different dance groups and 16 singing groups will
compete during unforgettable evenings. Professionals and amateurs from Tahiti
and other archipelagos will take to the stage at Place Toata in Papeete and use
imagination and ingenuity to pay homage to Polynesian culture.
Legends old and new will come to life in the groups’ highly detailed costumes,
choreography and beats.
